Favorite music that was new to me in 2011

This is an unordered list of my favorite music that I discovered this year using exfm. Please forgive my tendency to be dozens or hundreds of years behind on the latest releases.

Show Biz Kids by Rickie Lee Jones
The original Steely Dan for reference:

All The Things You Are by Adam Benjamin

Hands On The Wheel by Willie Nelson

source: suncircle.org
I’m not sure how I missed ever hearing this song until it was played at my friend Nigel’s wedding while he was dancing with his new wife. Here’s an incredible remix of Ry Cooder by Nigel:

I Am Sitting In A Room by Alvin Lucier

This and the next one are unfamiliar recordings of familiar pieces. Incredible just intonation buzzing and geometric rhythmic patterns in the Tenney:

Black Hole Sun by D’Angelo

Is this actually D’Angelo covering Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun? If not, who cares, it’s great.

Wet by Snoop Dogg
http://ex.fm/song/a38
source: stereogum.com
My friend Katie said Wet is from the future… a time when filthy songs are written for the Las Vegas bachelor parties of English princes. Dude is another dirty song from the future.  The sounds are so crisp:

Chug-A-Lug by Roger Miller

Three versions of this rowdy and honest coming of age country pop song. #9 on the U.S. charts in 1964, according to Wikipedia.

The Waters Of March by Sergio Mendes

In English!

Color Him Father by Linda Martell
http://ex.fm/song/1xr
source: soundcloud.com
This might be my favorite music I found this year. This country version really makes the sentimentality of the song as clear as possible. It was originally recorded by The Winstons on the same single as “Amen, Brother” which is one of the most sampled songs of all time.

Sixteen Hollywood Silence: Hollywood and Vine by G. Douglass Barrett
http://ex.fm/song/1xp

A recording of the sounds at the corner of Hollywood and Vine in LA, automatically analysed and arranged for orchestra. Just gorgeous. Please start a Kickstarter campaign to pay an orchestra to record the other 15 movements, from other major intersections in LA.

Hoquetus David by Guillaume de Machaut

This is just an excerpt, but it’s worth it! It’s late breaking music with interlocking parts from fourteenth century France. While we’re in France and the past, here are a few of my favorites found this year from 17th century French composer and theorist Jean-Philippe Rameau:

Jean-Philippe Rameau Suite in A minor - II. Courante by Angela Hewitt

Les Palatins - Acte II, Scène 2: Sarabande by Christophe Rousset; Les Talens Lyriques
